Police say officers shot an armed man who was threatening them at a Hempstead apartment early Sunday morning.
According to Nassau detectives, Hempstead police officers responded to a call about a violent man around 4:50 a.m.
When they arrived at an apartment at 330 Washington St., detectives say a man began yelling at the officers, saying he had a knife and a gun and threatened to shoot them.
Police say 31-year-old Patrick Alexis, a resident of the apartment, opened the door with the knife in his hand and menaced the officers.
Authorities say that's when one of the officers used his Taser but it was ineffective. They say Alexis, who was still holding the knife, moved toward the officers in a threatening manner.
Police say this caused one of the officers to shoot once, striking Alexis in the upper torso.
Alexis was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment and is listed in stable condition. No additional injuries were reported.
Alexis faces multiple charges and will be arraigned when medically practical.
