A retired NYPD chief from Massapequa Park who dedicated his life to serving his country has died from a 9/11-related illness.
Charles Kammerdener passed away Friday at the age of 78.
Kammerdener's years of service began with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Vietnam. He joined the New York City Police Department in 1972 and spent nearly four decades rising through the ranks before retiring in 2011 as a three-star chief overseeing the Special Operations for the NYPD.
His obituary states Kammerdener lived his life embodying the motto of the NYPD, Fidelis Ad Mortem: Faithful Unto Death.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Massapequa Funeral Home South Chapel.
Donations in Kammerdener's memory may be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
