As snow and sleet came down across Long Island Tuesday morning, a 911 call alerted Nassau County police to a dire situation involving a dog in Uniondale.
Police say a 1-year-old pit bull mix named "Holly" was left outside in the snowstorm, tied to the porch of an abandoned house on Warren Street. Officers Michael Petrilla and Peter Arigo found the dog shivering under a bush when they arrived on scene.
Petrilla says they made a makeshift leash, led Holly to them and began petting her, causing her tail to wag. Arigo adds that they were able to get a blanket and took her to their vehicle to keep her warm.
The officers then headed over to a McDonald's and got a couple of burgers for Holly.
The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is caring for Holly. Shelter workers say she's in good health and will be put up for adoption.
