A Roosevelt mother violently slapped and then shook her 7-week-old daughter, according to court documents.
The documents say witnesses saw Fiona Lall, 30, repeatedly screaming at the crying infant, who was in a baby carrier.
The alleged incident happened Wednesday morning at a home on Whitehouse Avenue. It's a shelter for women and children known as Bethany's House.
Investigators say Lall admitted to slapping the baby in the face while in her bedroom at the shelter. The girl was taken to a hospital with redness and swelling to her eyes.
Lall pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. The judge set bail at $40,000 cash or $20,000 bond and signed an order of protection for Lall to stay away from the baby. Lall was present in the courtroom but ran out without comment.
Administrators for Bethany's House say Lall first went there when the infant was days old. They did not provide other details, citing privacy laws.
Lall, who works as a home health aide, also has a 9-year-old child. News 12 has confirmed that there's an open 2017 criminal case in which Lall faces assault charges involving that child. Lall’s attorney in that case calls her a victim of domestic violence.
