State police say they responded to an Apple crash alert for a car Sunday on the Robert Moses Causeway Bridge.
They say when they got to the scene, the car was unoccupied.
News 12 is told the troopers identified the driver as 21-year-old Edgardo Lopez, of Roosevelt, from a phone in the car.
They then began searching for Lopez, looked over the side of the bridge and found him treading water.
"We got the rope, sent it over to him, he was able to tie himself with the rope and I secured it to the bridge in case he couldn't swim anymore or hold on that way we had him," says New York State Trooper Alex Abrahall.
Lopez was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.
