Nassau detectives: Argument over money led to murder-suicide
A husband fatally shot his wife, then himself Thursday night after engaging in an argument over money, homicide detectives say.
The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. at a home on Thomas Place.
Police say Douglas Kelly, 54, shot his wife, Dawn Kelly, 50, in the chest in their bedroom. They say Douglas Kelly then turned the gun on himself in his daughter's room.
Officials say the couple's 21-year-old daughter discovered the bodies, and that Dawn Kelly actually called her daughter around 6:30 p.m. and told her not to come home because of the violent argument she was having with Douglas Kelly. Dawn Kelly even told her daughter to stay over a friend's house.
Police say they believe the fight was over money, and that Douglas Kelly was disabled and hadn't worked in 20 years.
Family members told police that the husband had a history of verbal abuse, but police say they were never contacted about his behavior.
Keith Scott of The Safe Center says there's help out there if you don't want to call police.
Police ask anyone who is a victim of abuse to not be afraid to come forward and get help. Anyone who is a victim of abuse can call the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence hotline at 516-542-0404.
