Authorities say 34-year-old Jonathan Wibben, of Coram, has been charged in connection to a deadly Port Jefferson Station hit-and-run that left 47-year-old Peter Williams, of Terryville, dead.
Police say it happened June 2 around 10 p.m. Williams’ sister tells News 12 her brother was out getting pizza from a local 7-Eleven. She said her brother had “the most amazing soul.
News 12 has learned Wibbens is a teacher in the Bethpage School District.
In a statement, Superintendent David Schneider said: “We are aware that one of our elementary school teachers has been arrested unrelated to any school district activities. At no time was the safety of students in jeopardy. The individual has been removed from the classroom pending the outcome of the investigation. As this is a matter of personnel, the district has no further comment.”
Wibben’s attorney William Petrillo said his client has expressed “a tremendous amount of genuine heartfelt sympathy and concern for the obvious tragedy in this case, that being the loss of life, and his heart and his thoughts and his prayers are for the victim’s family members and friends.”
Wibben pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was released on his own recognizance.
He is due back in court at the end of February.
