Police are investigating two shootings that took place just over two hours apart from each other in Huntington Station.

On Saturday night, police say a 20-year-old man was walking in the Long Island Rail Road parking lot when another man stepped out of his car and shot him in the foot.

Just over two hours later, police say two men were talking in a driveway on East Sixth Street when shots were fired at their home. The bullets narrowly missed the two men and an 8-year-old boy who was sleeping in a nearby car.

Matt Morris, who has lived in Huntington Station for 35 years, believes the community's gun violence problem stems from poor code enforcement at the town level in the past, and a lack of economic development in the area.

Morris says he would like to see Suffolk police re-establish an annex there.

Commissioner Tim Sini says he's considering it, but will try other strategies first.

"One of the things that we'll be doing immediately is allocating resources so that we have more bike patrols, more traffic enforcement at the five corners, and we'll have the FAST team, the firearm suppression team," he says.

Sini says the police department is also working with members of the community to establish an open dialogue.
