Police departments across Long Island participated in a one-day statewide effort Tuesday to stop drivers from illegally passing school buses.
As part of New York State's Operation Safe Stop, police targeted drivers in selected bus routes that have a history of illegal passing complaints.
As News 12 Long Island rode shotgun with police at a Jericho Turnpike bus stop in Mineola, three cars were pulled over at one time.
"Whether you are approaching the bus from the front or rear, you have to stop once the red lights are flashing and the stop sign of the bus is out," said Officer William Handworth of the Nassau County Police Department.
Ticketed drivers must pay a first-time fine of $250 and five points are added to their license. According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, a 30-day jail sentence is also possible.
An estimated 50,000 vehicles illegally pass school buses statewide each year.
