Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) out-of-left-field jab at Long Island on the U.S. Senate floor yesterday ruffled the feathers of many Long Islanders, including legendary musician Billy Joel. The Hicksville native brushed off the senator?s comment, saying, "Let them say what they want, we know what we know... If someone wants to say, 'regrettably,' that we're part of the United States, they don't really know the place."McCain raised eyebrows yesterday when he said that Long Island was "part, albeit sometimes regrettably, part of the United States," during a Senate debate on terrorist detainees.New York politicians rushed to Long Island's defense, as did Newsday columnist Joye Brown. "You can't walk 5 feet on Long Island and not hit a veteran, not hit someone who was in 9/11, someone who lost someone in 9/11," Brown says. The Piano Man summed it up neatly: "Our history is amazing, the people here are great people, and we probably have better food than they do, where McCain's from in Arizona."Not to knock Arizona," he added. To watch extended video of the interview with Billy Joel, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and select the 'iO Extra' tab.
