The owner of Peter's Clam Bar in Island Park says construction outside his restaurant is damaging his property and driving customers away. 

The restaurant owner says a large crack in his floor was caused by on-and-off construction at the Barnum Bridge that has been going on since October 2016. Cracks have also been found in the sidewalk and in the restaurant's countertop. 

Peter's Clam Bar is open, but the storefront and parking lot are fenced off due to the construction. Manager Pepe Poblador says sales have been down 30 to 40 percent.

The owner says they were told that work wouldn't take place during the busy summer months, but County Legislator Denise Ford says that's not true.

"We told the residents when we had our public meetings that once we started the project, we were going to follow it through all the way to completion and that there will be pain and that people will be impacted by this," she said. "We never said we'd stop work in summer."

Officials say the project is ahead of schedule and could be completed by the end of the year. After the bridge is replaced, work is expected to begin on the Loop Parkway Bridge between the Meadowbrook Parkway and Point Lookout.
