Long Island Salvadorans with Temporary Protected Status will be able to stay in the United States for now.

The federal government put a last-minute freeze on an executive order that would've removed legal immigration status from 200,000 Salvadorans across the country.

The program allows people already in the country to remain here with work permits renewable for up to 18 months, if conditions are unsafe for return.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement Wednesday that it will announce a decision on El Salvador “at the appropriate time” and the protections would be in place until then.

“For 25 years, these families have worked, raised children, purchased homes, built businesses and helped power the Long Island economy.,” said State Senator Monica Martinez, of Brentwood, who was born in El Salvador.

“But today’s relief cannot be the end of the conversation. Over the past year, DHS has moved to strip TPS protections from roughly one million people from other nations who have also built their lives, families and futures in America,” Martinez continued.

The Senator is urging the administration to extend the same opportunity and stability to Salvadoran families, as the program’s future is yet to be determined.
