A group of firefighters were busy swinging hammers and not axes in Patchogue Saturday to help out the widow of a fallen comrade.
Dozens of volunteer firefighters worked to repair the old roof in loving memory of Eddie Summers, a 35-year veteran of the Patchogue Fire Department. Summers died of a heart attack while on duty in June. His widow, Pat, glowed as she watched the show of caring from the community. She calls the labor of love heaven sent.
Patchogue's bravest say they're doing what Summers would have done for any one of them. ?All these years that he put in I think were well-deserved to our department. And now, it's our turn to pay back and help them out,? says Fire Chief George Grauer.
The firefighters weren?t the only ones lending a helping hand. National Roofing Supplies of Patchogue donated $5,000 worth of materials to make the repairs possible.
The Summers family says Eddie would have been proud of his firefighting brothers.
