A suspicious envelope labeled "anthrax" was delivered to Newsday offices in Melville Friday.
According to Newsday, the envelope contained a packet of sugar with the label "anthrax sample." It also included a CD titled "Anthrax Shock and Awe Terror."
Authorities say the delivery is similar to mailings sent to other news organizations across the country. The envelopes were allegedly sent by 66-year-old Mark Meyser, of California. He was arrested by the FBI earlier this week.
"During our interview with him, he indicated he mailed an excess of 100 packages," says FBI Special Agent Steven Dupre. "To date we have confirmed seven have been received, five in California and two on the east coast."
According to authorities, all of the packages tested so far have come back negative for anthrax. Suffolk police have sent the substance in for testing.
Newsday offices were closed for part of the day as a result of the delivery. Spokeswoman Diedre Williams says the company is taking the incident seriously despite the unlikelihood that the letter was contaminated.
"The safety and well being of our employees is what was most important today, so we took all the proper precautions," says Williams. "But it looks like this was all part of a hoax."
