Brooklyn officials say to be wary at the beach today of “life-threatening rip currents.”
Red flag warnings were implemented at Coney Island - meaning swimming is off limits due to the choppy and dangerous waves. The currents are strong enough to carry away even the most skilled swimmer.
News 12 observed no lifeguards on duty during the warning and swimmers in the ocean.
The city has seen several near-drownings and two teens who fatally drowned. Those incidents happened when lifeguards were off the clock.
The rip current warnings are in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.
