The Nassau County Medical Examiner has determined the presumptive cause of death for the 10-year-old Levittown girl who died over the weekend was influenza A.
Further tests to confirm the cause of death will be performed by the state Department of Health. Those results are expected later in the week.
Dr. Abby Greenberg, of the Nassau County Department of Health, says the onset of the child?s sickness was quick and her symptoms progressed very rapidly.
Doctors say flu deaths are rare and mostly occur in the elderly. According to the Centers for Disease Control, four children have died from the flu so far in the 2008-2009 flu season. In the last flu season, 83 children suffered deaths related to the flu and 68 the season before that.
The Nassau County Department of Health says it?s not too late to get a flu shot, emphasizing the flu has become widespread in the state.
