A demolition crew on Boston Avenue in Bridgeport was tearing down a building Monday morning when they halted their work due to an unexpected discovery.
"I couldn't believe my eyes," said Russell Capozziello.
"There were three tiny kittens just sitting there among the rubble - so I called my friend Annette Papastavros, who works with animals, and she rushed over here to help us," Capozziello told News 12.
Papastavros is a local animal rescuer who collected the kittens, wrapped them in a blanket, then managed to trap their mother using food as bait, she said.
"I see this all the time -- but it never stops being heartbreaking," Papastavros said.
Bridgeport Animal Rescue officials say there are thought to be "well over 60,000 stray and feral cats in Bridgeport."
"That's why we encourage people to spay and neuter their cats," said Jennifer Wallace, Bridgeport's chief animal control officer.
"There are spay/neuter clinics that you can take advantage of to get them spayed or neutered so that they don't end up becoming pregnant or getting another cat pregnant and contributing to this enormous cat population," Wallace said.
Papastavros said she has found a volunteer who is willing to take the kittens and their mother in until the adult can be spayed and all four animals can be adopted.
