The NYPD officer from West Islip who helped save a little girl shot in Times Square is being hailed a hero.
Newly released police body cam footage shows Officer Alyssa Vogel running toward the little girl when someone told her a baby was shot. Vogel got to the girl, put a tourniquet on the 4-year-old's leg to stop the bleeding, scooped her up and started running. Vogel sprinted for more than a block to get the child into an ambulance.
"When the mother had come onto the ambulance with me, she obviously was in a panic that she had just seen her little baby get shot," says Vogel. "So, I was just trying to calm her down, trying to get her to breathe with me so she wouldn't have any panic attacks. I was just telling her we're on the way to the hospital, your daughter is going to be OK."
Neighbors from the tight-knit block where Vogel lives are celebrating her actions. They say Vogel, a new mom herself, is a great police officer and a good neighbor.
None of the three people shot in Times Square were seriously hurt. News 12 is told the little girl had surgery and is expected to be fine.
