New York Institute of Technology is selling most of its college campus in Central Islip.

Called an eyesore by many residents, the buildings at the Central Islip campus have sat boarded up and empty for 14 years.

NYIT is selling 106 acres of the property along Carlton Avenue to three developers.

There's no word on the developers' plans for the site, but the news is welcome for longtime residents like Jack Napoli.

"They might as well use land that's, you know, already here," he says.

Tania Harrington says she'd like to see a community center built on the grounds to benefit students in the area. And Leann Smith says affordable housing would be a good fit for the neighborhood.

A spokesperson for the Town of Islip says officials have not received any applications for development at NYIT. But two of the parcels in contract are zoned for educational purposes and any other use will require approval from town officials.

NYIT will continue to operate a health care center on the property. The college will also donate 8 1/2 acres and a building on Eastview Drive to the Central Islip School District.
