The state Parks Department is floating the idea of allowing camping on the historic grounds of Camp Hero in Montauk.
There's a proposed area for tents, RVs, cabins and space for "glamping," or glamorous camping, with expensive services for guests.
Many Montauk residents worry the influx of people would create traffic jams, sewage and litter, as well as impact the wildlife and keep residents from enjoying the park as it is. There are also safety concerns regarding open flames near the woods.
Another concern is the bluffs at the park. There is no fence keeping people away from the cliff edge, which could lead to accidental falls.
The 415-acre Camp Hero was an Air Force base in the 1940s. Buildings from that time remain, but many are broken down and abandoned.
New York State Parks officials say they're reviewing a proposal for limited camping at Camp Hero.
"We will be in discussion with local community representatives to determine the best course of action to move forward," the agency said in a statement.
