More than 300 people were hospitalized with the flu this week, according to the New York State Health Department. That's a 40% increase from the previous week.

Doctors are urging people to take precautions now, including getting vaccinated sooner than they normally would.

"What we really need the public to know is, flu is early this year so you really need to get your flu vaccine sooner than you normally do," Dr. James McDonald said.

Health officials also recommend washing your hands, coughing into your elbow and staying home if you get sick to help limit the spread.
