The North Hempstead Town Board rejected a proposal to expand the Hillside Islamic Center.

The proposal had been rescheduled multiple times due to conflicting viewpoints and concerns.

Four council members voted to reject the proposal, two voted to pass it and one abstained during a special meeting on Tuesday night.

The proposal would have added another level to the center and created new parking spots.

Leaders of the Hillside Islamic Center say they want to expand to accommodate the hundreds of worshippers who come to their mosque.

However, residents of the area say the expansion will make parking and congestion in the area worse.
