The family of a Hofstra University student who was accidentally shot and killed by a police officer has filed a new federal lawsuit, according to a report by Newsday.
A Nassau County police officer shot 21-year-old Andrea Rebello, of Tarrytown, in May 2013 during a standoff with an armed robber who was using her as a human shield in an off-campus house. Police Officer Nikolas Budimlic also shot and killed the robber, armed parolee Dalton Smith.
The civil rights lawsuit, which names Nassau County and police officials, claims that police didn't conduct a proper investigation and weren't properly trained to deal with hostage situations, according to the report.
