New York State Assembly, 4th District
Steve Englebright
Democratic
Background: Englebright, 72, of Setauket, is running on the Democrat, Independence and Working Families party lines. He has been an Assembly member since 1992, and was a Suffolk County legislator for 10 years before that. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and earned his master's degree in paleontology/sedimentology from Stony Brook University. He is now chairman of the Assembly's environmental conservation committee. Englebright was named Legislator of the Year in 2016 by the Environmental Advocates of New York for his work on ocean acidification and climate change. He has two daughters.
Issues: Englebright is focused on climate change and wants New Yorkers to be more reliant on renewable energy, rather than carbon dioxide generators. It's part of a steady cause he's taken up for the past few years. In 2016, he introduced an environmental bill that would have provided incentives to workforce training to install solar panels to reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The bill passed in the Assembly but died in the Senate. "We at the state level need to make sure that we implement policies that gives us a chance to avoid the negative impacts of climate change," Englebright said.  He wants local schools to operate with more state funding, which he said would keep property taxes from increasing. "I'm fighting for money for public schools and universities," the incumbent said. Englebright said he wants to protect drinking water and ensure tourism and farming on Long Island remain thriving industries.
Christian W. Kalinowski
Republican
Background: Kalinowski, 25, is running on the Republican and Conservative lines. He lives in Port Jefferson.
