State Attorney General Letitia James is calling on New York to ensure the right to abortion under state law.
The move is in light of the leak of a Supreme Court opinion draft that could overturn Roe v. Wade.
James is expected to make an announcement calling for the amendment to the New York State Constitution that will bolster the right to abortion under state law.
As of now, New York follows the federal guidelines of Roe v. Wade, but if it is overturned, New York’s abortion rights will stay in place.
An amendment proposed by lawmakers would bolster already in place state laws that protect abortion and make the state a safe haven for those seeking a legal abortion.
Over the weekend, Long Island continued to protest in the wake of the leaked draft decision concerning the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
AG James is expected to make an official announcement around 10 a.m.
