The newly formed Nassau County Aviation Committee was announced Friday with the goal of fighting for quieter communities.

The committee is comprised of 16 politicians from both sides of the aisle.

Residents in Williston Park say they've always dealt with airplane noise, but the noise levels have skyrocketed in recent years. They say it's because flight paths have been compressed into superhighways in the sky, unfairly shifting the burden on some neighborhoods.

Jana Goldenberg, of Plane Sense for Long Island, says planes fly over homes every 30-60 seconds, some flying at altitudes under 2,000 feet.

State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages says it's about making sure residents have an acceptable quality of life.

When asked for comment, an FAA spokesperson pointed out that a forum currently exists to discuss community concerns. But the agency would not say if anything specific is being done to cut down on engine noise.
