Long Beach officials have enacted new rules in the city following a shooting and large crowds in the town earlier this week.
To prevent future unlawful gatherings, Long Beach city officials said that beach passes will be required seven days a week through Labor Day. The beach passes originally were required only on weekends and holidays until June 27.
The beach is also now closed to everyone from dusk until dawn except during permitted events.
The city manager will have the authority to close the beach at any time if needed.
City officials say unpermitted gatherings of over 100 people are illegal and event organizers will be charged.
Some residents are applauding the city's swift action, while others said it isn't fair.
Ally Salerno, of Long Beach, said, “I’m glad that they're taking measures to make sure that the community’s safer and people are safer."
John Behr, of Long Beach, said, “Being able to come to the beach after work, have dinner and hang out is something I look forward to all day, so the closing after dusk is something that will impact me."
Some people are complaining about the new rules on social media:
“There has got to be a better solution,” wrote one poster.
“I can't go for a nighttime walk on the beach now? That’s the answer? Why are the residents being punished?” wrote another.
