Nassau County held its first-ever recruitment open house in Old Bethpage on Sunday.
Over 40 departments attended the event.
Attendees got to see live demonstrations and the process of how firefighters bring fires under control.
Organizers said one of their goals is to inspire the next generation of firefighters and EMS personnel.
"The importance behind this too is the community involvement, it's to get everyone wrapped around one umbrella, talk about what the volunteers are all about, and how there's a place for everybody," said Nassau Fire Service Academy Chief Instructor Paul Wilders.
Fire officials say recruitment has been down but is trending upwards as of late.
