NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, of Massapequa Park, was fatally shot in the line of duty Monday evening.

He was on the force for three years and received several awards for excellent police duty, according to data from the NYPD.

Residents from his community described him as a respectable family man who would not hesistate to help out a neighbor in needs.

John Ferranola, of Massapequa Park, asked everyone to respect the family's privacy and called Diller's death a "horrible, horrible moment."

"Never had to ask him for help, he always offered to help others," Ferranola said of Diller. "That's all you can ask for in a neighbor."

The NYPD police commissioner says that Diller leaves behind a wife and young child.
