Residents of a North Bellmore neighborhood are calling for a traffic light to be installed at what they say is a dangerous intersection.
Neighbors say the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Davenport Place has been the site of high-speed collisions, not just fender benders. Some say the odd angle of the spot where the roadways meet plays a role.
"This intersection is a weird geometry, it's not a 90-degree," says resident Anthony Eremitaggio.
Parking in the area is also a factor, according to neighbors. They say cars often park close to the corner on Bellmore Avenue, making it difficult to see oncoming cars when pulling out into traffic.
"I've been here for year and a half now and it seems like every month there's a new accident on this corner," says resident Bryan Larson. "I'm always rushing out there to help them."
The Nassau County Police Department says it has records of six accidents at the intersection between Jan. 1, 2015 and Sept. 1, 2016.
Eremitaggio says he's asked county and town officials for a traffic light. He and other residents say moving parking signs away from the intersection could also help.
A spokeswoman for the Nassau County Department of Public Works says the need for a traffic signal will be investigated in the new year.
