A house fire early Sunday morning in Freeport left at least eight people hospitalized, according to officials.
The Nassau County fire marshal says 100 firefighters responded to the blaze just before 3 a.m. at 79 Smith St.
The flames heavily damaged the building and took firefighters about an hour to fully extinguish.
Officials say all the occupants were able to exit. Ten people, including three children, were injured.
Two of those people refused medical attention and while the rest were treated at Nassau University Medical Center.
The American Red Cross is now assisting the displaced residents. The Nassau County Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
“It’s so sad especially before the holidays," added a neighbor.
"We lost everything in the fire, but we escaped with our lives,” said the homeowner who asked not to be named.
