Some Nassau residents are calling for changes in the property tax assessment system.
Officials say the system received an overhaul after it proved to be inequitable for years. They say the current residential and commercial taxes are fairer than they have ever been. Still, many residents say they are paying more property taxes than neighboring towns for similarly valued property.
Nassau tax assessor Harvey Levinson says school taxes should be scrapped in favor of an income tax to ensure everyone with the same income will pay the same. Nassau Executive Tom Suozzi, currently running for governor, says the problem can be solved with more state aid from Albany.
