Nassau officials announced a second probable case of swine flu Friday as it awaited confirmation on another case.
Health officials say the new case is an adult who lives in Long Beach and recently returned from a vacation in Mexico. They say the person became sick on the way home and did not have to be hospitalized.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected to announce a person in Oceanside is also infected. That person is a part-time employee at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens and at the Jewish Community Center in Oceanside. Some residents say they are surprised that the center is open since the person worked there. However, the JCC facility has been sanitized and the health department issued a letter saying there is no health threat at the building.
Health officials have already confirmed that a Great Neck student at St. Francis had swine flu. Dozens of swine flu cases have been confirmed at the school.
There have not been any confirmed cases in Suffolk, but there are probable cases in Holbrook and Deer Park.
New York State says it will soon be able to confirm swine flu tests in its own lab in Albany rather then send them to the CDC.
