Nassau police officers went door to door in Roosevelt Friday to publicize an initiative that gives residents cash rewards for information about illegal guns. GunStoppers gives residents an anonymous hotline to call to report the information. Callers receive a PIN number and if police retrieve a stolen gun, they issue a reward through the caller?s PIN number. GunStoppers was launched in January, but police say it didn?t catch on. That?s why they took it to the streets.
Four dozen recruits teamed with officers to hand out brochures about the program to Roosevelt residents and businesses. Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says the area was selected because of the number of guns officers dealt with there.
Nassau police are offering between $400 and $500 if they recover a weapon from a tip, and $2,000 if the weapon recovered is linked to a major crime. People with information about illegal guns can call the hotline at 1-877-4GUN-411.
