Nassau police stepped up their patrols in the county's waterways in search of reckless boaters during the July Fourth holiday.
The county's marine unit also kept an eye out for boating while intoxicated offenders.
"Each and every time we make a stop and we conduct an inspection of a boat, we are also conducting an inspection of that operator and people on board," says Officer Joel Fouco. "If we see that an operator is even so much as impaired, we take immediate action. We don't stand for BWI in Nassau County."
According to New York state, most boating accidents happen on weekends during July and August. Last year, Nassau County had 24 accidents, 20 injuries and two fatalities. Suffolk's numbers were higher – 51 accidents, 37 injuries and six fatalities.
The marine unit says they also stepped up patrols with Homeland Security, specifically targeting foreign vessels arriving in Nassau's waters.
