The Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a new measure to shorten the service time it takes for some first responders to qualify for partial tax exemptions.
Currently, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers have to serve five years to get the exemption on county property taxes. The new rules would make it so individuals would only have to volunteer for two years to get the break.
The tax break could be up to 10%.
Local municipalities could also opt into the program, giving first responders an additional break on that portion of their tax bill.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is expected to sign the measure.
