Nassau County health officials on Friday recalled lunch bags they gave away to needy mothers because the materials might contain lead.
The lunch bags were given to 169 families in the county through the WIC program - Women, Infants and Children. WIC seeks to promote healthy eating habits, and the lunch bags specifically encouraged the inclusion of fruits and vegetables in children's diets.
Dr. Abby Greenberg, acting commissioner of the Nassau Department of Health, said health officials issued the recall after noticing a label tucked inside the lunch bag that states, "Warning: This Product May Contain Lead." The manufacturer plans to launch its own recall shortly, she said.
Of the 169 bags distributed, the health department has received 74 of them back so far, Greenberg said. Bags can be returned to any of the five WIC sites, which are located in Westbury, Hempstead, Freeport, Elmont and Glen Cove.
Greenberg said it is unclear how high the lead levels are in each bag.
