Fifty new Nassau County police recruits were sworn in Monday, and nine officially became deputy sheriffs.
Over half of the recruits came from the NYPD to join the Nassau County Police Department.
"The NYPD has great training - they have a different environment that they police, and now you come here, we're going to treat you a little different in our training process," says Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder. "But again, you come with great experience, the NYPD is a great department."
Nine of the new recruits have military backgrounds and served our country. Now they will be serving our county.
"This a new step in my life, I'm excited to learn everything," says Ryan Bollerman. "I have heard that this is a very difficult academy, and it makes this the best police department in the country - so I'm ready for the challenge."
The new recruit now begin a seven-month training program.
County Executive Bruce Blakeman told News 12 he will make sure there is enough in the budget for 36 new police officers next year.
