A proposed 285-unit condominium complex on the border of Mineola and Garden City is creating a controversy between the two communities.
The Winston, already approved by the Mineola Village Board, is to be built right off Old Country Road. The nine-story building would be four times the density Garden City?s building code currently allows.
Some residents complain the building would be too big and bring too much traffic to the area. However, Mineola Mayor Jack Martins maintains the building will have a positive impact on the community.
Supporters of the project also say it would bring in more money for local businesses and contribute millions of dollars to schools.
Former Garden City Mayor Harold Hecken, who now sits on a development committee, says the condo building is a move toward urbanization. He says the village wants a compromise with Mineola.
The project still needs the green light from the county and Garden City village planning commissions.
