An 11-year-old trumpet player from North Bellmore didn't let the rain spoil Memorial Day for at least one veteran.
Nicholas DeGregorio had been practicing for months with his school band to perform in the Memorial Day parade. His mother, Mary, says he has a deep appreciation for the men and women who served the nation. She say her father and her father-in-law are both World War II veterans.
When inclement weather hit on Monday, Nicholas asked his mother to ride along the parade route so he could play his trumpet for anyone that happened to be outside.
That's when they came across a woman and her father who had hoped the parade was still on. They didn't stay disappointed for long.
The fifth-grader played "You're a Grand Old Flag" for the World War II veteran in a moment captured on his mother's cellphone.
"He was sad and I made him happy," Nicholas tells News 12.
Mary DeGregorio says that "Nicholas just brightened their day."
