Multiple people have been rescued from rip currents in Shirley, according to the Suffolk County executive's office.
Suffolk County Parks reported 46 saves by lifeguards at Smith Point Beach. Seven people were also rescued by county lifeguards at a non-county location.
Suffolk County police say they responded to multiple incidents at Smith Point Beach on Friday. Just before 6 p.m., they say they received a call for a 34-year-old mother and her 6 and 10-year-old daughters, who were caught in a riptide. A 36-year-old man had been able to pull them to shore safely.
Police say that shortly after this, they responded to another call at the same beach for a 30- and 40-year-old who were also caught in a riptide. They were helped by a nearby surfer.
All of the people refused further medical treatment after being evaluated by the Mastic Beach Ambulance.
County Executive Ed Romaine advises residents that lifeguards are no longer on duty as of 5:30 p.m. and that beachgoers should not swim when they are not present.
