Mortgage co. and charity pay off mortgage for fallen hero’s family
The family of a Long Island hero who died in Iraq got a double surprise Tuesday when they found out that the mortgage on their Port Jefferson home was being paid.
Rebecca Briggs was initially presented with a check from Caliber Home Loans for $33,000 to help pay her mortgage. She then learned that the Tunnel to Towers Foundation picked up the rest of the tab, and paid off her $300,000-plus mortgage.
Briggs’ husband, Tech Sgt. Dashan Briggs, along with three other members of the 106th Rescue Wing, died in a helicopter crash in Iraq back in March.
"Tunnel to Towers wants to step up to the plate and take care of these families," says Frank Siller, of Tunnels To Towers.
The organization says it has allotted over $7 million to give to families of first responders who died in the line of duty
