Authorities say dozens of dogs, guinea pigs, flying squirrels, birds and ferrets were removed from a filthy Syosset home Wednesday afternoon.
Nassau SPCA officials say the home was not fit to be lived in by animals or people. The animals were found living in their own feces and dirt. SPCA workers filled nearly six vans with more than 100 animals and put a fence around the house.
The woman who lives at the home, 53-year-old Angelica Mazzarella, was a recluse, police say. Neighbors say the stench that came from the house was unbearable.
Police say the investigation into Mazzarella started in December when a Jericho veterinarian notified police that she kept bringing in animals that were sick and dying.
The animals were taken to a shelter. Mazzarella was brought to Syosset Hospital, where she was declared mentally incapable. Police are not charging her, but the town could still issue violations for keeping exotic animals in the house.
