Mayor Eric Adams has announced that 25 asylum seeker shelters are slated to close soon.
According to the mayor’s office, New York’s successful management strategies have dramatically decreased the number of people in the city’s care, reducing costs.
As a result, the El Rancho Hotel in Williamsbridge will no longer house migrants within the next two months.
Earlier this year, Mayor Adams announced that the Relief Center at Randal’s Island will close on Feb. 28.
The Legal Aid Society and Coalition for the Homeless responded with a joint statement. It said in part:
“In preparation for the president-elect's plans to implement mass deportations nationwide, we are closely monitoring these closures to ensure new arrivals' access to shelter and protection from any potential federal immigration enforcement."
