Flames spread quickly through a Belleville home early Thursday morning, engulfing multiple structures as firefighters battled to bring the blaze under control.

The fire erupted around 3 a.m. on Crescent Terrace. A neighbor said he was inside his home when he suddenly heard “popping noises.” He went outside and said he saw “a house up in flames and a huge plume of smoke” with flames everywhere.

The neighbor said he was concerned about the fire spreading.

Crews from multiple towns responded to provide mutual aid, including Bloomfield, Nutley and Newark. Several streets were blocked as first responders from around the region arrived to assist in bringing the fire under control. The fire chief says all hydrants in the area were working but would not say whether water pressure was an issue.

Officials say at least 10 people have been displaced. All indications are that everyone inside both homes got out without physical injuries.

There is still no official word on how the fire started as the investigation continues.
