Suffolk County leaders are urging motorists to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones following a deadly crash that killed a road worker and seriously injured two others.

The public safety campaign comes days after a Ronkonkoma man was charged in connection with a crash that authorities say left a 38-year-old road worker dead and two co-workers injured.

“One will never be home, and two of them are still in the hospital, and one lost their leg,” said state Sen. Mario Mattera.

According to officials, 26-year-old Thomas Lobianco has been charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.

State and local leaders say stronger measures are needed to better protect highway and road crews who face dangers every day while working near traffic.

Huntington Town Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino knows those dangers firsthand. He said he was struck by a vehicle while working years ago.

“I was doing a routine traffic tow, 6 p.m., and I was run over by a drunk driver,” Sorrentino said. “I’m lucky enough to be standing here talking about it.”

The deadly crash is one of many incidents officials say highlight the risks road workers face across Long Island. Several lawmakers are now pushing for tougher penalties targeting drug-impaired and reckless drivers.

“These are horrific and horrendous choices that are being made that cause too much pain and too much sorrow to too many families,” said Assemblyman Steve Stern.

Stern and Mattera said they are working on legislation that would require drivers to keep both hands on the steering wheel while traveling through work zones.

Lawmakers are also backing another proposal designed to make it easier to prosecute drivers under the influence of drugs.

“This will have consequences just like drunk driving laws,” Mattera said.

Officials say the message to drivers is simple: slow down, stay alert and help ensure road workers make it home safely.
