Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano gave county union workers until today to come up with savings to prevent layoffs next year. That deadline has passed with no deal from unions, and roughly 400 layoffs are expected by Jan. 1.
Mangano warned unions they had to find $75 million in savings by today, with an additional $75 million in February, or else hundreds of union workers will be out of a job. Mangano says he has no choice but to follow through with layoffs, as raising taxes is not an option.
Union workers say layoffs will decimate services, especially in departments where budgets have already been stretched thin.
Negotiations are still ongoing, and the legislature will be voting on the potential layoffs Monday. The CSEA says it will file lawsuits against any layoffs, especially if private contractors are brought in to fill union jobs.Clock ticking in showdown between Exec.
