There is a long list of families who want to adopt a newborn child who was dropped off at the Wantagh Fire Department on Thanksgiving.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano says hundreds of people have contacted the Department of Social Services to adopt the child, nicknamed "Baby Hope."
The child was born premature, weighing 3 pounds and 13 ounces. She was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where doctors said she is in good health.
Baby Hope must gain about 1.5 pounds before being medically cleared, after which a court hearing can be held for termination of parental rights for her biological parents.
The Wantagh firehouse is a designated Baby Safe Haven drop-off location, which means anyone can drop off a baby anonymously with no questions asked.
