Police have charged a Baldwin man with murder after they say workers found a woman's body Wednesday afternoon behind a row of businesses near his apartment.
The woman's remains were spotted at the rear of 97 Merrick Road at 12:48 p.m. near the Baldwin Lanes bowling alley. The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Deanna Wingender, of Syosset.
Police charged Raphael Oyague, a 36-year-old Baldwin resident, with second-degree murder. He was arraigned Thursday morning in Hempstead. If convicted, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
Detectives say Oyague responded to a Craigslist ad soliciting sex and arranged for a car service to pick up the woman Tuesday night.
"An argument ensued, and our subject ultimately hit our victim with a hammer multiple times," says Detective Capt. John Azzata, of Nassau's Homicide Squad. "He removed the body... placed her in the woods and then returned to his apartment. Eventually our crime scene detectives were able to track down minor blood droppings to our subject's home."
Police say Oyague has prior charges including third-degree assault and criminal contempt of an order of protection.
Charles Harris, a manager at the bowling alley, was one of the first to see the body.
"Two guys who work at the pizza parlor told me to come over to the grass -- they think there was a body there," Harris says. "And there was a body."
He says the victim was partially stripped and had blood on her fingers.
"This is a very, very rare occurrence here, especially around this neighborhood," says Joe DeFrancis, who owns DeFrancisco's Pizzeria. "The good thing about it is that in the back parking lot, there's only one way in and one way out, and there's many cameras back there."
