Relatives, friends and loved ones gathered at Calverton National Cemetery Monday for the annual Memorial Day tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
It marked the cemetery's 37th annual ceremony. Solemn attendees listened as speakers paid their respects to the fallen service members interred there.
For many in attendance, the pain of loss is felt every day. "We understand life goes on," said Jim Naughton, of Lake Ronkonkoma. "We do the best we can to deal with it."
Flags had been placed at the gravesites ahead of Monday's ceremony.
